Jul. 3rd, 2008 @ 06:33 pm Yay! Three Days in a Fireworks Factory
[info]davisgroves
Current Mood: awake
Current Music: Distant fireworks & rain hitting the AC unit

By now, you may have noticed my "Subjects" are as random as the thoughts in my head.  So be it.
  • As tomorrow is the day Americans celebrate Beer & Charcoal by getting drunk and using poorly-assembled Mexican explosives to blow up family members accidentally, I have a three-day weekend. Yay, Summer Vacation!
  • My neighborhood seems to have started the exploding early even though it's been pouring rain off and on for hours.  At least they're dedicated to something besides YouTube and So You Think You Can [Insert Any Human Behavior Here].
  • Monday, I sort of have a new job (just for half a day) for three weeks.  I'd say I'm all a-tingly, but that seems to just be the finger I smashed in a door yesterday because I'm a klutz.
  • I've finished approximately 23% of the sudoku book [info]watchmespinning sent me.
  • I still have more things to post at Glimpses & Remains, but I ordered some square cards today, so the 120 film and Polaroid scans don't look so funny on a bed of 5" x 7" whiteness.
  • I have 14 days to finish A Tale of Two Cities.
  • I have 10 days to finish the four library books I still have checked out (and return them...those late fees add up!).
  • I should, therefore, probably be reading right now.

Jul. 3rd, 2008 @ 12:11 pm Does anyone know of a good place to buy loose tea?

Preferably in the Rockville/Bethesda (or further north area).  My father is a tea drinker and I would love to get him some unusual teas for his upcoming birthday.

Thanks.

A bunch of you are going to find outdated comments by me. After another period of LJ mostly-hiatus, I went through and looked for profiles again today. I missed some pretty good posts. But anyway, if you posted a profile and you don't see it in the sidebar now, would you please link me to it, or let me know the approximate date that you posted it?

What else? Well, things are going pretty well for me. I'm definitely on a plateau of sorts. I'm not getting anything new done, but I think (after a bit of a backslide recently) I'm doing a pretty good job keeping things up where they are and I think we're living pretty decently. If I had to pick my main problem right now, I'd have to say that it's floors. I don't know why I don't just pick up the broom and sweep. What am I afraid of?

What about you guys? Anyone want to check in here about the state of their flyness?

ETA: I was so inspired by all my FLY-reading this morning, that I went and finished clearing out the master bedroom in the old house. I have a bunch of stuff to home now, but I'm feeling better about my ability to make progress clearing things out of there.

Semiotics

[sem-ee-AH-tix] –noun-

1. the study of signs and symbols as elements of communicative behavior;
the analysis of systems of communication, as language, gestures, or clothing.
2. a general theory of signs and symbolism,
usually divided into the branches of pragmatics, semantics, and syntactics.

Dictionary.com entry for semiotics
Over the past three decades the semiotics of men's athletic wear has been puzzling.
Back in the 1900s, when I was a kid, their basketball shorts and swim trunks were as short
as the day is long. God Bless America.

Online Etymology Dictionary entry for semiotics
study of signs and symbols with special regard to function and origin, 1880, from Gk. semeiotikos "observant of signs," adj. form of semeiosis "indication," from semeioun "to signal," from sema "sign."

Contrarians-- Everyone is already aware of what all is wrong with everything under the sun -- make good use of yourself and come up with a better example sentence for that word, and /or explain to me what the parachute-dimension of men's shorts is all about, as a communicative gesture of the past several years... please and thanks!

Jul. 2nd, 2008 @ 07:39 pm Cat care on the Hill
[info]hoppymuk, posting in [info]washingtondc
Hey, I went through old posts and sent e-mails to some of the services that offer cat-sitting stuff on the Hill and that's cool, but I totally remember some LJ user posting that s/he is willing to pet sit and I went through the tags and memories and can't find it.

I could totally have dreamed it all, I suppose. I'm a little addled like that. Just, if that was you, fellow LJ-er, can you reply to this? Call me a crazy cat lady (correctly) but for some reason I think it would be nice to throw my business to an LJ user. Thanks!

this probably is the wrong place for this, and i appologize in advance. but, i'm moving to the area for a new job in a couple months. i've only visited a few times, so i'm not that familiar with the area. i'm a single 29 year old female. what areas should i be looking to live, and what areas do i need to avoid? any particular apartment complexes you'd recommend or discourage? any places that offer government employee discounts? any information would be greatly appreciated!
Jul. 2nd, 2008 @ 03:58 pm Free Change Counters?
[info]wanderingbastet, posting in [info]washingtondc
I have a big ol' change jar that's finally full, and it's time to deposit it. I don't, however, relish the thought of wrapping all that coinage by hand, nor do I want to lose 8% or whatever to one of those CoinStar machines. I know there used to be a bank around town (Chevy Chase, maybe?) that had free coin counting machines that you didn't have to have an account to use - anyone know if that service still exists? Or somewhere else I could go?

TIA!

I work at the corner of 15th & M NW (next to the Washington Post building). Almost every parking garage in the block is one where you leave your keys with the attendants as they'll double or triple park cars to fit as many in there as they can.

Are there any self-park garages in that vicinity? I'd be arriving early (6:30 AM) so if there's room besides the monthly accounts, I'd be okay probably). But I need to make a hasty exit tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 and don't want to wait 15 minutes for the attendants to fetch my car.

Many thanks in advance for suggestions:

(I'm aware of the option to park in the garage, but get the car out beforehand, park on the street and just zip out when 1:30 hits, but would prefer an actual garage for the entire time)

PS: [info]propopdan, I should've used the word, "car-hole."

Far-out freaking film about some international scientists racing into outer space to stop an asteroid from schloping Earth only to find that there is an even bigger problem: The Green Slime! The Green Slime are one-eyed space parasites that have freakishly long arms that schock and kill. Passing Poston: An American Story
Saturday, July 12, 2008, 1:30 p.m.
Rasmuson Theater
National Museum of the American Indian
Fourth Street & Independence Avenue, SW
Metro: L'Enfant Plaza (all lines except Red); exit Maryland Avenue/Smithsonian Museums

Passing Poston, a new documentary by Joe Fox and James Nubile, tells an emotional, poignant story of four former detainees of the Poston Relocation Center during World War II.

Poston was among the 10 War Relocation Authority (WRA) concentration camps built to imprison Americans of Japanese descent in remote areas away from West Coast shores. These prison camps were scattered from inland California to faraway Arkansas.

The WRA imprisoned over 18,000 Japanese Americans at Poston Relocation Center between 1942 to 1945. The prison was built on the Colorado River Indian Tribes Reservation – the result of a unique agreement between the WRA and the Office of Indian Affairs (OIA). The U.S. Government was aware that many Japanese Americans were skilled farmers – and the government quickly figured out how to capitalize on those skills.

While interned, these Japanese Americans cultivated the surrounding lands, transforming the dry arid landscape into productive fields. After the war, Native Americans from surrounding smaller reservations migrated to the Colorado River Indian Tribes Reservation to continue to develop the now-productive land. Their descendants continue to live and farm there today.

Come join us to learn more about this little-known part of American war history. The filmmakers are scheduled to be in attendance to answer audience questions after the screening. For more information about the film, go to www.passingposton.com.

This program is co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Program and the National Museum of the American Indian.
