Finished the semester...graduation is Saturday. I can't believe how fast time goes by or how quickly we fill our lives with new adventures as soon as one ends. I've got my article to finish my Friday and my thesis to do this summer. I'm moving out of my apartment in a week. August and my move to PA will be here before I know it. Sigh...

I think that somebody on my friends list posted a link to silverjewelryclub.com a while back, but I am too busy right now to go search for it. My main question was if their comment was positive or negative. They had a write up about the free jewelry (you just pay $6 for shipping or something) in one of the magazines I subscribe to and I looked at the site. It looks like nice stuff, but as I don't have a ton of extra money lying about, really wanted to get an opinion from somebody who has bought some of it before I spend anything. Thanks!

So, I am spending more time over at facebook than on LJ these days. I guess because over there I don't feel like I have to open up as much. There is a ton of stuff going on that I want to write about here but just can't get myself to do it. Maybe soon though, I have just been so busy.

Anyway, Facebook has this application called "Random facts about me" that lets you choose 20 facts about yourself, written in the third person, that will pop up on your profile page. Since I figured not all of my friends on here may know all of these, I thought I'd share. :-)

April would pay for a TV station that just played Firefly, Futurama and Law & Order 24/7.

April prefers Dr. Pepper to Coke. (both in diet, please)

April wishes she had more time to read for fun. Suggestions?

April loves quotes.

April loves junk food and eats it too much. Oops!

April’s favorite class in school was debate (as anybody who’s ever disagreed with her could probably guess)!

So, I have finally made a decision about grad school. I'm going to go to Penn State!!

In the end, I got in and was offered full funding at all seven schools I applied to. It was a pretty hard decision and it came down to two or three favorites. Then I had my visits. Ultimately, Penn State's funding is most generous (considering low cost of living, summer funding, conference funding and they pay for my health insurance); they also have a top-notch faculty that are really involved in adolescent delinquency and juvenile justice issues. PSU is ranked #7 in the country for my degree (I also got in at #3 University of Cincinnati, #4 UC-Irvine, #11 Florida State, #16 American University, #18 Temple and also UT-Dallas which is unranked because it is a new PhD program). Ultimately, I am really happy with my decision. I think that I am going to do well there. I got along great with the students and faculty and they are interested in and support the work I do-their R1 status also means that there is also work to do and my RA experience should be interesting. The toughest part is going to be getting my quantitative methods and stats skills up to par. PSU has a program nationally known as being super-hard, but it is also the type of school where a PhD from Penn State allows me to be qualified for a job at any top university when I get done.

So, to get from here to there, I still have to get through this semester, I'll be staying in DC for the summer to finish my thesis (damn data collection is taking forever to get my survey responses back), and then I have to be in State College by late August.

Just got back from my Penn State visit, it went really really well!!

With the breaking news of the mass shooting at the Illinois college campus, I can't help but sorta wish my work wasn't so relevant. My article about fear of crime on campus and gender differences in the use of self-protective behaviors is being published in a few months. I am finishing a review of an article about gender differences in fear of crime on campus as it relates to prior victimization right now. Once I get that back to the editor by the first, I will get my comments to my piece and have until May 1 to do final edits. Then it goes to the printer. Exciting and great for my academic career, but that doesn't make it a happy topic. I just have to remember that my research and my work has a purpose-to inform and hopefully contribute to making campuses a little safer.
