"Being a graduate student is like becoming all of the Seven Dwarves. In the beginning you're Dopey and Bashful. In the middle, you are usually sick (Sneezy), tired (Sleepy), and irritable (Grumpy). But at the end, they call you Doc, and then you're Happy."

Yes, I am addicted to Law & Order

Clarification: My LiveJournal is friends-only for everything and anything related to my real life. I do post a lot of quotes, essays, quizzes, etc. that are public and anyone can see those.

Clarificationx2: So, I caved and created a dummy account for my real-life friends that want to read all my friends-only entries without getting an LJ account. The username is [info]aprils_friend, if you want the password, you'll have to email or ask me!
Aug. 21st, 2010 @ 07:43 pm I'm alive and well, but dissertating, so no guarantees about tomorrow!

So, it occurs to me that I haven't been on LJ in nearly 9 months (the last post was in January to say that Jim and I were talking again, funny how that roller coaster never seems to end, lol). And a lot has happened in that time. To me, to my friends. I've missed out on so much. As always. And I feel guilty about that. In fact, every time I would think about dropping over here to post, it would seem like such a huge task to update everything and read about everyone, that I just gave up. And, now with Facebook as my primary way of staying in touch with people, and grad school still keeping me really busy (though I am FINALLY at the dissertation stage people!), I KNOW I am not going to be able to be any better at it. So, I decided I would just admit defeat for the time being. They say that people come into your life for a reason and I've been so lucky to meet the amazing people I have on LJ and so many close friendships have resulted. I have my hands full with my new endeavor (which is going quite well) which is a blog I created to keep me sane and keep me working full speed ahead as I make it through these last 20 months or so of my PhD program. It's "The Distracted Dissertator" for anybody that's interested. But my [info]brideofninja journal is going to have to take a backseat for the time being. It served its purpose when I needed it most. And, for that, I'm grateful.

...if Princess could figure out a way to turn off my alarm (on my cell phone) in the mornings, I think she would. She (1) always looks very annoyed when it goes off as it wakes her up as well, and (2) much prefers it when I stay in bed so she has company to be lazy with all day. Not that I blame her. The life of a cat seems quite nice on an insanely crazy day like today.

Jan. 8th, 2010 @ 12:18 pm Winter Break
Current Mood: blahblah
So, I'm at the end of another winter break and for once, I am SO looking forward to the semester starting. I know that I promised to write a nice long update post while I was "vacationing" in Texas, but, obviously that didn't happen. So, here's a summary of the two weeks I was "on break", divided into easy-to-read (and easy to write without having to go into a ton of detail) categories.

BEST PART: Getting to spend time with my family. I spent a day with my sister Lori and niece Lily, another day with my younger cousin Shelby, and then of course seeing all the family on Xmas was nice.

WORST PART: My 4-month-old kitten Penny died. My sister accidentally kicked her and then my stepdad accidentally stepped on her. She was having so much trouble breathing. I took her to the animal hospital at 10pm at night and they put her in the special animal oxygen tank, but the trauma was just too much. She died in the middle of the night. I wasn't there and didn't get to say goodbye. We buried her in my parents' backyard.

WEIRDEST PART: I found out that I have an older half-brother. Apparently my Dad fathered a child while he was a young man (late teens/early twenties) and living in CA. My Dad never told me and neither my Mom nor his first wife (Lori's mom) know the name of the mother of that child. Unless she put Dad as the father on the birth certificate (highly unlikely), there is no way for me to find my half-brother (who would be in his mid-thirties now). So, I found out about a relative I wish I could meet but probably never will.

HAPPIEST PART: The first few days, before anything happened to Penny, when I was spending time with my family and just resting. When I was putting off school/work (that never ended up happening anyway), but wasn't feeling bad about it yet.

SHORTEST PART: The hours that I got to spend alone with my parents. Between them working and there always being other people around, I didn't get a ton of quality time.

LONGEST PART: The Drive!! It took about 40 hours each way due to bad weather conditions on the roads (Mapquest says it is just a 21-24 hour drive depending on the route).

MOST ACTIVE PART: Shopping! My Mom dragged me to IKEA where we spent too many hours walking and walking and walking! Did get a few much-needed items for my apartment though.

LAZIEST PART: Watching TV marathons. Seems like every show I liked was being run marathon-style at some point during my trip. I was able to watch a lot of Law & Order (original, SVU, and CI)! Along with House, The Unit, Reba, Golden Girls and a bunch of other shows I don't have on DVD and hence never get to see!

WHAT I ACCOMPLISHED: Very little, lol. I did buy some furniture (a new office chair for my desk and a dresser for the bedroom) and do some reading (a self-help book about organizing and decluttering that I didn't get to finish), but that is about it. I certainly feel bad about that and am really excited to be back in PA and being productive (which makes me happy!).

WHAT I DIDN'T GET TO DO(but had wanted/planned on doing): Seeing friends!!! There are at least a half-dozen friends that were on my to-see list that just didn't happen. I was supposed to read two other books, including one for school on multilevel modeling. My dissertation idea was supposed to get more fleshed out so that I could present it to my committee this month, yeah, that is not going to happen now. Sigh...

Dec. 20th, 2009 @ 02:22 pm A different way to start winter break...
Current Mood: annoyedannoyed
So, my mom is stuck in the Philly airport because of the big snowstorm we had Friday-Saturday. Waiting for her to find someway to get to State College so we can begin our long drive to Dallas with the cats. I'll be down there about two weeks and then drive back. Hopefully I will find time to post some while I'm there! Have lots to say and do to record where I am now and where I'm heading because 2010 is going to be a whole new life for me, and boy am I ready!
